The RVC project team recommends utilizing Camtasia Studio with Snagit to produce multimedia presentations to supplement course content. The Camtasia/Snagit software bundle allows users to create videos less than five minutes in length through screen capturing. The software bundle is available as a download to local computers, and Camtasia files are downloaded and stored on users' computer. Users can publish Camtasia presentations using Google Video, Yahoo Video, or YouTube and then embed them into RVC’s content manager, Wikispaces.
The main benefit of Camtasia Studio with Snagit is its functionality. Users can capture PowerPoint slides, demonstrations, videos, music, photos, and webpages and save them as .avi files. They can create interactive videos with features such as clickable links, searching, and a table of contents as well as easily share files on almost any device. According to Drumheller & Lawler, screen capture recordings may help gain students’ attention and can be used as an alternative to face-to-face instruction, and students may use the recordings as a “reference” (2011, p.93). The drawback of the software is that most users will need training. Drumheller and Lawler (2011) suggest that recording software like Camtasia may not be easy to use but is worth learning.
With a 40% discount for educators, pricing for the Camtasia Studio/Snagit Bundle is $199.00 per computer (TechSmith, 2012). The project team recommends purchasing fifty software packages to provide each teacher and support staff member with access to the program. The RVC project team recommends dedicated training and at least one, six-hour intensive workshop for faculty and staff. In addition to the intensive workshop, the DE Specialists are encouraged to provide intermittent refresher training as needed.
